Agricultural Emissions

Agricultural Sector Inventory

This calculator utilizes data available through the Ontario Agricultural Census to estimate emissions from the agricultural sector for individual towns, cities and communities. The calculation utilizes the average number of cattle and pig livestock from the county level census data and assigns emissions based upon your communities proportion of the total county population.

The analyis is limited to pigs and cattle as this is the only livestock data available in the census dataset. This analysis could be improved through the used of a agricultural livestock survey that could be administered by the municipaliity. The survey could extent the animal types to include goats, sheep, chickens etc. for additional resolution into emissions species sources.

Enter the Name and Population of your county as well as your municipality below. Obtain the number of County Census Farms from Table 1 and enter it in the input feild.

Results of the 2021 Ontario Agricultural Census indicate an average of 97 Cattle (including calves) and 1671 Pigs (including piglets) per Ontario Farm. Using this information the calculator exptrapolates an estimate of each within your county and municipality.

Using these livestock population estimates we can then calculate the livestock emissions using the estimated annual emissions factors for cows (4.714 TCO2e/yr) and pigs (3.719 TCO2e/yr)
